Karen Hansen Art
A Rotorua Artist, working directly inside active geothermal systems and landscapes, ,allowing place-specific processes to imprint surfaces with story
Watts & Hughes Innovation Award – Rotorua Museum Art Awards 2026
In 2026, Karen Hansen (Daniels) was awarded the Watts & Hughes Innovation Award at the prestigious Rotorua Museum Art Awards for her work Primordial, judged by leading Aotearoa curator Julie Catchpole (Pictured Left).
Primordial was recognised for its innovative, process-led approach to material and place. The work was created through direct engagement with Rotorua’s geothermal landscape, combining botanical immersion dyeing, and burial within an active volcanic fumarole. Heat, steam, sulphur, pressure, and time were allowed to act directly upon the silk, producing an indexical surface shaped by environmental forces rather than representational intent.
In her judging remarks, Catchpole described the work as reading “like an abstracted landscape of mānuka and steam,” reflecting the conditions and processes through which it was formed.

Karen Hansen (Daniels) is a multidisciplinary artist based in Rotorua, New Zealand. Her work invites a reconsideration of how body, creativity, and the living world participate in shared processes of relation.
Hansen employs site-responsive and process-led methodologies informed by animistic cosmology and ecological materiality.
Her work emerges through sustained field listening, relational exchange, and co-creative emergence, articulated through the framework she names Sussurrus / Communion / Awen. This approach privileges attention, reciprocity, and material transformation over fixed authorship, allowing works to arise through dialogue with place and elemental forces.
Hansen’s current body of work, Geothermal Index, engages the energetic topography of Rotorua’s geothermal landscapes, exploring thresholds between body, chemistry, environment, and consciousness. Across her practice, she invites a re-consideration of how creativity functions as a relational act, and how meaning is formed through participation rather than separation.
